Just in: See How Deadly Niger Delta Militant Group MEND Attacked Goodluck Jonathan

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), has said Nigerians should not believe whatever Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan says. In a statement made on Wednesday, June 7, MEND attacked GEJ, describing him as a liar.

According to Premium Times, Jomo Gbomo, spokesman of the militant group said Jonathan lied against Charles Okah, a leader of MEND, when he accused him of culpability in the Independence Day bombing.

The statement came a week after the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court cleared Mr. Okah of treasonable felony charges.

The presiding judge, Gabriel Kolawole, said there was no evidence to back the federal government’s claim that Mr. Jonathan was a target of the bombing, which occurred during the 2010 Independence Day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja.

Mr. Gbomo welcomed the ruling as “thoughtful and cultivated”, but slammed the Nigerian justice system as ‘irritatingly slow’ because the trial had dragged for too long.

He said the conclusion of the court “vindicated the Okah brothers” and exposed Mr. Jonathan “as a compulsive, desperate and pathological liar.”

The spokesperson said the group had “no interest whatsoever” in assassinating Mr. Jonathan or any other Nigerian leader.

Instead, Mr. Gbomo said, MEND remained disturbed by Mr. Jonathan’s alleged failure to emancipate the people of Niger-Delta when he was president from 2010-2015.

“Our grouse with the former president borders on the fact that he single-handedly frittered away the golden opportunity bestowed on him by providence to emancipate the Niger Delta region.”

Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, did not immediately respond to requests for comments Wednesday afternoon. Okah’s brother, Henry, was also identified as one of the masterminds of the Independence Day bombing, found guilty and sentenced to prison in South Africa.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole who presided over the case said the it was dismissed as a result of the inability of the prosecution to prove that President Goodluck Jonathan, who was at the Eagle Square during the bombing, was the target of the blast or was intimidated by the attack.

According to him, the evidence presented failed to prove that Goodluck Jonathan was sneaked out of the eagle square, venue of the 50th anniversary celebration of Nigeria’s independence.

The Justice also said the evidence did not prove a case of treason as contained in count one of the charge. Going further, he posited that the evidence cited by the prosecution did not prove that governors were targeted in a blast during a meeting on March 15, 2010 in Warri, Delta state.

Kolawole also said the governors were intimidated. He however dismissed a no-case submission filed by Mr. Okah and other defendants.
