Niger Delta militants have said Tuesday’s meeting between the federal government and some elders and traditional rulers from the region will not stop the bombing of oil installations.

President Muhammadu Buhari met with Niger Delta leaders at the state house in Abuja on Tuesday and was presented a 16-point request.

The agitators expressed dissatisfaction that no former militant leader was among those chosen to be part of region’s representatives in the meeting, adding that any meeting without them would not yield positive results, The Punch reports.

They stated that none of the stakeholders chosen to be part of the meeting was aware of the plight of the Niger Delta people.

This was disclosed in separate messages by members of the Niger Delta Peoples Democratic Front (NDPDF) and Concerned Militant Leaders (CML).

The leaders of the two groups, simply identified as General Ben and General Playboy they cannot be deceived.

Pipeline bombing cannot stop because the people going for the meeting do not know why they are going there. It is not the first, second, or third time and would not be the last. So, we cannot be deceived or bamboozled by whatever tag is given to the meeting.

“We insist on implementation of the report of the National Conference and other reports on the development of Niger Delta region. Anything short of this is insincere and will not be accepted. For a genuine peace, past reports of several commissions on Niger Delta must be visited,” the statement read.

According to the militants, elders and leaders from the region do not really know the plight of Niger Delta people because they are wealthy and they are not even based in Niger Delta.

Playboy said the elders represent themselves and not the people in the rural areas, adding that they do not take issues about the region seriously.

We don’t need people who will play politics with the genuine struggle of Niger Delta people. We don’t want people, who are not agitators. The real agitators are people like Alhaji Asari Dokubo, High Chief Government Tompolo, Egberipapa, General Africa, General Joshua and many others.

“These are the kind of people that can negotiate for our people. They know the plights of the Niger Delta people because they live in the same environment with them. They are not based abroad. They come down to the communities to know the feelings of the people. Such people should represent us.

“Note that none of the ex-agitators is in the negotiating meeting. With due respect, we respect our elders.  But, for this meeting, we do not need them. As long as we are concerned, this meeting will not yield any positive result because the right people are not included. The real people are the freedom fighters because they know what they were fighting for,” the militants said.

The groups were also doubtful of President Muhammadu Buhari’s sincerity to provide $10billion development fund for the Niger Delta region.

They described it as political sabotage while adding that the ongoing negotiation is not in the general interest of Niger Delta people.

Militants have been attacking oil facilities in the Niger Delta region which has led to a sharp decline in oil production and affected Nigeria’s earnings. The government has been trying to dialogue with them to resolve the crisis in the oil-rich region but they have continued to bomb oil installations.
